Ben Pullen Leading Agriculture at Buena Vista University

Pullen brings extensive experience in youth development, education, and community engagement to BVU’s growing agricultural program.

Buena Vista University (BVU) is excited to formally introduce Ben Pullen as the Director of the Institute for Agriculture at Buena Vista University. Named to the role in late 2024, Ben brings extensive experience in youth development, education, and community engagement to BVU’s growing agricultural program.

Prior to joining BVU, Pullen served as Senior Field Manager for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H, where he spearheaded statewide initiatives and led innovative programs such as AgOvation and FLEx. His work expanded opportunities in STEM, agriculture, and civic engagement, strengthening connections between education and industry.

With a background in curriculum development, mentorship, and community partnerships, Pullen has been instrumental in fostering impactful programs across Iowa. His leadership extends beyond education, as he actively participates in organizations like the American Farm Bureau and the National Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals.

A BVU alumnus, Pullen holds a Master of Science in Professional School Counseling (2011) and a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education (2007) from the university, along with an Associate of Applied Science in John Deere Ag Tech from Northeast Iowa Community College (2002). His return to BVU marks a full-circle moment, bringing his passion and expertise back to the institution where he began his professional journey.

“What excites me most is the opportunity to connect my experience and education with agriculture and bring it back home to BVU, where I started my career,” said Pullen. “Years ago, this wasn’t an option, so I’m thrilled to be part of it now. If the ag program had existed here 20 years ago, I would have been in it. Now that it’s here, the opportunity to help grow it into a sustainable and thriving program in Northwest Iowa is both a huge responsibility and incredibly exciting.”

BVU’s Institute for Agriculture is dedicated to fostering innovation and sustainability in the agricultural sector while providing students with hands-on learning experiences. Under Pullen’s leadership, the university looks forward to expanding its agricultural programs and strengthening its impact in the region.
