Members of the Buena Vista University Student Activities Board (SAB) attended the National Association for Campus Activities regional conference in Madison, Wisconsin, April 16-19, where they received several awards.
The Midterm Munchies program was selected as the recipient of the Series Programming Award, in recognition of SAB's work in bringing non-traditional food items to campus, free to the student body, while giving students an opportunity to take a break from midterms and refuel.
Additionally, the Pinterest program won the Innovative Programming Award, in recognition of its efforts to revamp the traditional craft night with a Pinterest theme. The program provides students with an opportunity to express themselves with do-it-yourself craft projects in an environment where socialization and meaningful connections can occur.
These awards were presented to an outstanding program from a member institution, and are based on student involvement, creativity and success.
Five BVU students also presented at the conference. Alexis Williams, a senior corporate communication major from Mahtomedi, Minnesota; Kayla Lohse, a senior corporate communication and Spanish major from Charles City; and Egypt Clayton, a senior business-human resource management concentration major from Early presented "We're Not Just Friends, We're Family: How Creating an Organizational Culture Helps with Retention and Recruitment." Other student presenters included Bonnie Keller, a senior biology major from Sioux City and Morgan Langan, a sophomore communication studies major from O'Neill, Nebraska, who presented "You, Me, and Leadership."
Dr. Becka Neary-DeLaPorte, director of student activities and leadership development, also participated in the conference by hosting an educational session entitled, "Creating Digital Student Leaders on Your Campus."
"The student activities board puts a lot of time and energy into the nearly 50 events and engagement opportunities it plans for BVU students each year. Being a recipient of these awards is a great reminder that hard work and innovation is recognized," said Neary-DeLaPorte. "SAB members are encouraged to fully engage in the conferences they attend, as applying for awards, submitting educational session presentations and volunteering while on-site is part of what makes the conference experience more fulfilling and worthwhile."
Other SAB members who attended the conference were Grace Wilkinson, a junior communication studies major from Woodward and Kayleigh Stanek, a junior criminology and criminal justice major from Glenwood.
