Stepping into a Career in Business
When he graduated in May, Michael Meisheid knew that his triple-major in business management, finance and banking, and economics fully prepared him to begin his career at United Fire Group in Cedar Rapids.
On May 24, Michael Meisheid confidently walked across the Buena Vista University commencement stage knowing that his triple-major in business management, finance and banking, and economics at BVU fully prepared him to begin his career as an underwriter trainee for United Fire Group in Cedar Rapids.
Like many of his peers, Michael was undecided on a major when he first stepped on campus. At BVU, students are not rushed into deciding on a major; in fact, all BVU students are encouraged to explore career paths through a variety of courses which, along with the guidance of professors, help lead them in a direction that sparks their interests. Michael made his decision during his first year of classes, realizing he could make strides with a career in business.
Michael credits his choices to his academic advisor and the professors within the Harold Walter Siebens School of Business who helped guide and push him to where he is today. "I would frequently stop in and ask for advice, and the professors were always willing to help me out. They were each eager to help me and other students, even outside of the classroom," said Michael.
In addition to BVU's top-notch professors, Michael took advantage of activities outside of the classroom, including academic travel to Europe and playing on the football team, and an internship which led to his job.
“Even in my first days at United Fire Group I realized just how relevant the material I learned in class is to the daily tasks I complete. I'm confident that the leadership skills I gained on the field and the knowledge I soaked up in the classroom will serve me well in my career.”
