Senior Always Finds Ways to Help Others

Kaleb Kibret, an international student, came to BVU four years ago with the goal of pursuing a career in medicine. He will graduate with a bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences in May and looks forward to continuing his education and serving others.

For two years, Kalab Kibret has worked for Campus Security at Buena Vista University, always reporting to work with a smile.

“I like helping students; it’s good for me to try to solve problems and to help where I’m needed,” says Kibret, a biomedical sciences major who plans to keep solving problems and helping others in his career as a nurse.

The native of Ethiopia came to BVU four years ago, the first in his family to receive an education in the U.S., attracted by the pathway it offered to a career in medicine.

“One of my BVU highlights involves my participation in the URMED  internship... I had the opportunity to serve both the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and Loring Hospital in Sac City.”

Following his graduation in May, Kibret will take a gap year off as he awaits enrollment in nursing school at Creighton University.

He’ll be busy in the interim, however, as he and his wife, Rachel Mouw, of Sioux Rapids, plan to repeat their wedding vows on June 5 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake.

“We are in the process of buying our first home in Sioux Rapids,” Kibret says.

“I’ll stay here next year as Rachel will earn her master’s in education from BVU in May 2021. She’s in the Teaching English as a Second Language program.”

Kibret says he’s enjoyed his BVU undergraduate experience. When not studying or providing security, the McCorkle House resident advisor could be found tutoring students at the Center for Academic Excellence, which is where he and Mouw met. Kibret also served as president of the BVU International Club.

“One of my BVU highlights involves my participation in the URMED (Undergraduate Rural Medicine Education and Development) internship in January 2018,” says Kibret, who speaks English and Amharic. “I had the opportunity to serve both the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and Loring Hospital in Sac City. I observed physicians who would explain to me what they were doing as they treated their patients.”
