ROTC Cadet Receives Governor's Award
Buena Vista University ROTC Cadet Brandy Fowler, a senior public administration and political science major from Spirit Lake, received the Governor's Cup ROTC Award for outstanding achievement from Iowa Governor Terry Branstad.
Buena Vista University ROTC Cadet Brandy Fowler, a senior public administration and political science major from Spirit Lake, received the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Governor's Cup ROTC Award for outstanding achievement from Iowa Governor Terry Branstad in a ceremony on April 7.
The award recipients are chosen by the Iowa State University Professor of Military Science, and the award recognizes ROTC members for leadership, academics and military achievement.
"This award is unique to Iowa, and we appreciate Governor Branstad recognizing the military and the ROTC programs across the state," said Fowler. "All of the cadets who received the award are incredible, hardworking people, and I am really honored to be included with them."
Fowler was chosen to receive the award based on her demonstrated academic, social and leadership abilities. She has maintained a high GPA, is treasurer of BVU Student Senate and is the co-president of BVU's chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She has led and participated in many seminars on campus furthering the rights of women in academics and society. She has also been selected to attend two elite seminars in Washington D.C. focused on the development of the political process in our nation.
"We are extremely proud of Brandy; her drive coupled with intellect is unmatched in our program," said Capt. Thomas R. Gorman, assistant professor of military science and officer in charge for BVU's ROTC program. "She leads by example and is a true professional that inspires excellence in others."
Fowler will be commissioning as a second lieutenant in the in the U.S. Army, branched military intelligence upon graduation from BVU in May. She will attend military intelligence training at Fort Huachuca in Arizona and will be stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
