Rock Stuffs Dozens of Experiences into Three-Year BVU Run

Lincoln Rock, who will graduate with the class of 2020 after just three years, made sure to fill his time at BVU with a variety of activities. From basketball, to mentoring youth, to internships, he covered a lot of ground.

Lincoln Rock created a major during his time at Buena Vista University. He led the American Rivers Conference in steals as a starter on an 18-win basketball team. Rock completed a trio of business and/or service internships and participated on the winning unit in the prestigious Okoboji Entrepreneurial Institute.

He was a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and helped influence dozens, if not hundreds, of young people in Storm Lake through the organization of Community Game Nights in which FCA members played soccer, basketball, and dodgeball with elementary and middle school youths.

The Mahtomedi High School graduate mentored a Storm Lake High School student through BV Buddies. He gave of himself as a tutor through the Center for Academic Excellence, led Bible study on the basketball team, and participated in BVU Campus Ministry.

Rock did all of this in three short years. He’s graduating after his junior year concludes in May.

“I’ll miss so many things about BVU... Not many schools provide you with resources to play a sport, dabble in the arts, and graduate with a double major while completing several internships; all of it in three years.”

“The coolest thing about BVU is that anything I wanted to do, I could do because our professors, staff members, and people in the community are so open and encouraging of anything we want to try,” Rock says. “I could major in two areas, Business and Corporate Fitness and Wellness Management, because my professors worked with me to create my second major.”

When he wasn’t interning on the business development side with Stickers and Posters Print Manufacturing in Storm Lake, Rock was developing a business model and strategic marketing plan for Endless Sea Coffee at The Bridge in Storm Lake. He also deepened his interest in pottery.

In a ceramics class, Rock was able to "throw" clay on an electric wheel to create items such as coffee mugs, vases, teapots, and bowls. He'd then take those items through a bisque firing process, after which he'd apply apply glazes and stains before firing them once again.

Rock’s immediate future involves a wedding, as he and 2019 BVU grad Emily Kim eye a July 4 wedding date. Following the ceremony, they’ll move to San Antonio, where Lincoln intends to start his career while Emily continues medical school.

“Being at BVU has been awesome,” says Lincoln Rock, who joins his older brother, Joe Rock, in the Class of 2020. Lincoln says he misses lawn golf and being part of the community this spring. In time, he’ll dearly miss basketball competition, and the thrill of crashing the offensive boards. He’ll miss teammates and friends, professors and staff, and the activity that comes with a student deeply committed to a variety of interests.

“I’ll miss so many things about BVU and the Storm Lake area,” he says. “Not many schools provide you with resources to play a sport, dabble in the arts, and graduate with a double major while completing several internships; all of it in three years. I’ve had so many great experiences in my time at BVU.”
