Finalists Named for 2019 George Wythe Award
The recipient of the award, which was endowed by the late Paul and Vivian McCorkle, will receive a sabbatical and a $30,000 stipend for faculty development.
Four professors have been selected as finalists for Buena Vista University’s 2019 George Wythe Award for Excellence in Teaching. They are:
- Dr. Nathan Backman, associate professor of computer science
- Dr. Calle Friesen, associate professor of education
- Dr. Shawn Stone, professor of physics and computer science, interim dean of the School of Science
- Dr. Jared White, assistant professor of Spanish

The 2019 Wythe Award Selection Committee included Mr. Jerry Johnson (chair), assistant professor of digital media; Dr. David Klee, associate professor of instrumental music and director of jazz studies/music production and technology; Dr. Benjamin Maas, assistant professor of environmental science and geology; Dr. Karin Strohmyer, assistant professor of special education; Dr. Bradley Best, professor of political science; Dr. Jason Shepherd, associate professor of computer science; and Ms. Beth Blankers, professor of accounting and assistant dean of the Harold Walter Siebens School of Business. (Dr. Leslie Haas, assistant professor of education, replaced Dr. Strohmyer for the initial selection process. Dr. Scott Anderson, professor of marketing, is serving as proxy for Ms. Beth Blankers who is on sabbatical this semester.)
