"Exploring the World Through Outdoor Recreation" ACES Event, Kayaking Workshops
Adventure seeker and Storm Lake native Chuck Stark will be on campus sharing his story of exploring the world on foot and in a kayak. Stark will also offer kayaking workshops through the American Canoe Association.
Buena Vista University will host the event, "Exploring the World Through Outdoor Recreation" on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. in the Estelle Siebens Science Center, Room 126 as part of its Academic and Cultural Event Series (ACES). The event is free and open to the public to attend, and no tickets are required.
Adventure seeker and Storm Lake native, Chuck Stark, will be on campus sharing his story of exploring the world on foot and in a kayak. Students and the community are invited to come learn about his experiences and how he got started in the recreation industry.
Stark has taught and guided rock climbing, kayaking, backpacking, environmental science and wilderness leadership throughout Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado and Costa Rica. In 2012, he became the Senior Instructor for the REI (Recreational Equipment Incorporated) Outdoor School in Chicago. Stark is a Wilderness First Responder and an American Canoe Association Kayak and Stand-Up Paddleboard Instructor.
In conjunction with the event presentation, Buena Vista University students will take part in kayak workshops throughout the day on Sept. 12. On Saturday, Sept. 13, Stark is offering two kayaking workshops through the American Canoe Association to members of the Storm Lake community from 9 a.m.-noon and from 1-4 p.m. Participants will learn basic kayaking techniques, how to safely maneuver their kayaks and the joy of the sport and being on the water.
There will be a nominal fee of $25 for the public workshop, and only five participants will be allowed per workshop. Participants will need to be 14 years or older and the workshop will be completely hands-on and in the water.
