Digital Media Major Looks Forward to Most Memorable Commencement

Tyler Brunner, a member of the class of 2020, relishes his memories on the Storm Lake campus and is committed to returning, whenever the time may come, for his graduation ceremony.

Tyler Brunner takes a short break from work to discuss his path to and from Buena Vista University. Brunner, a member of the BVU Class of 2020, finished his work on campus in Storm Lake and hit the job market a few months early, landing a position as assistant news director at KCII Radio in Washington.

“There was a big fertilizer spill today,” Brunner says. “I went to do interviews and cover it. There was something like 2,400 gallons spilled.”

“When we have our Commencement, whenever we fight this virus off, it may be one of the most memorable events ever on the BVU campus.”

Brunner’s work at KBVU had the digital media major prepared for work in southeast Iowa. Being far from Storm Lake, however, has him missing campus and the close friends he made throughout his time as a Beaver. While on campus, the Arcadia native had a KBVU radio show, did news broadcasting, and enjoyed a short stint with The Tack, BVU’s online newspaper. He also worked for BVU Sports Information Director Steven Phelps and completed an internship with the Carroll Merchants baseball organization.

One item of business he didn’t tend to…yet…involves a final BVU goodbye.

“When COVID-19 hit, it just seemed like our last goodbyes were prematurely taken away from us,” says Brunner, who plans to return to campus when BVU’s Commencement takes place.

“When I came to KCII to work, I told my program director I was ready, except for one commitment back in Storm Lake that I’d have to drop everything to go to,” Brunner says. “When we have our Commencement, whenever we fight this virus off, it may be one of the most memorable events ever on the BVU campus. I really want to be there to celebrate, not only for the Class of 2020, but for everyone fighting through this pandemic.”
