From Chile to California to Carnegie Hall, BVU senior Savored Travel

Senior biology major, Becca Peters, has vowed to continue her service travel experiences beyond her BVU years.

Becca Peters savors the travel opportunities she enjoyed during her undergraduate experience at Buena Vista University. It’s one of the BVU benefits she plans to carry on after she graduates.

“I hope to take trips to participate in service as an adult,” says Peters, who spent time in Chile, California, England, Scotland, and New York, as a BVU student and a member of the choir.

In Chile, she joined a BVU group while hiking, camping, and helping care for a pristine mountain environment. In California, she used Stine Endowment funding to meet with researchers at the University of California-Berkley and the University of California-Davis. She witnessed parts of England and Scotland in January as part of a BVU excursion exploring origins of the Harry Potter literary phenomenon. In New York, she joined BVU singers in a choir performance at Carnegie Hall.

“I want to help people. Being a PA would allow me to be on a somewhat similar level as a doctor in that I’d be serving and helping to treat others.”

“They were all amazing experiences; I was so fortunate,” says Peters, who hails from Audubon.

The biology major who served as an academic assistant to Dr. James Hampton, BVU Professor of Biology, plans to attend graduate school in the future. Her goal is to one day work as a physician’s assistant.

“I want to help people,” she says. “Being a PA would allow me to be on a somewhat similar level as a doctor in that I’d be serving and helping to treat others.”

Peters, who participated in BVU’s Student M.O.V.E. (Mobilizing Outreach and Volunteer Efforts) and BARC (Beaver Animal Rescue and Care), also worked as a community coordinator for Pierce-White Halls. Additionally, she helped with The Bridge’s Community Garden and gave of her time in the local elementary schools. Peters says she’ll miss the work, the activity, and the organization she aided as she heads off to graduate school.

“I’ll also miss students, staff, and faculty that have become like family to me,” Peters says. “I’ll miss seeing them every day and being part of the support system at BVU.”
