BVU Warms to Idea of Winterfest Fun

Ice bowling, ice sculpture, and broomball competitions will take place at the event on Feb. 9. Participants will be eligible for prize drawings made available by BVU and Storm Lake United.

Buena Vista University joins Storm Lake United in offering a rebirth of Winterfest on Storm Lake, Feb. 9.

“We participated with Storm Lake United on Winterfest activities a few years ago,” says Trevor Berneking, BVU Director of Recreation Services. “We wanted to bring it back and get people outside enjoying recreation in the winter.”

The only issue, at least by mid-January, involves Mother Nature’s refusal to fully cooperate. Consistent daytime high temperatures in the 40s leaves Storm Lakers on “thin ice” if not next to areas of open water on the 3,097-acre lake.

“If you’d like to fish, bring your own equipment and we’ll provide bait donated by Gone Fish’n in Storm Lake. We’ll also have members of BVU’s ALPS organization offering hot cider and hot chocolate in the Rec House.”

“Winterfest on the lake, of course, depends on our weather and the ice conditions,” Berneking says. “If we don’t have snow, or if it’s too warm, we’ll move activities off the lake.”

If a deep freeze ensues between now and early February, allowing the ice to thicken and solidify, Berneking will help oversee nighttime skating for BVU students near the University BVU Rec House south of Scout Park on Feb. 7 and Feb. 8.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 9, BVU and Storm Lake United will welcome BVU students and community members as they skate, snowshoe, fish, and do some cross country skiing.

“If you’d like to fish, bring your own equipment and we’ll provide bait donated by Gone Fish’n in Storm Lake,” Berneking says. “We’ll also have members of BVU’s ALPS organization offering hot cider and hot chocolate in the Rec House.”

Ice bowling, ice sculpture, and broomball competitions will also take place on Feb. 9, weather permitting. Participants will be eligible for prize drawings made available by BVU and Storm Lake United. For information, email Berneking at Bernekingt@bvu.edu.
