BVU Student Named Finalist in International Photo Contest

A recent trip to South Africa not only landed Emily Kenny a coveted spot as a finalist in an international competition, but also confirmed her career aspirations.

Buena Vista University student Emily Kenny, a senior psychology and digital media double major from Schaller, has been named a finalist in the international “Shoot the Wild” photography contest.

“Being chosen as a finalist was a surreal feeling,” said Kenny, who plans to pursue a career in photography or photojournalism. “When I was looking through the photographers who have won or have been chosen as finalists before, they were all well-established and have been doing this their entire lives.”

Dr. Andrea Frantz, professor of digital media at BVU, said, “The contest is highly competitive and juried ‘blind,’ meaning no names are associated with the images submitted.”

Kenny's qualifying image depicts two lions devouring a zebra and was taken during a month-long environmental and wildlife South African trip she completed in August. All finalists’ images are published in the 2017 Shoot the Wild book of photography.

“The shot I got was a very rare scene to capture which is what I believe made it stand out,” added Kenny. “After this trip and being chosen as a finalist, it is clear to me that I have chosen the right career path.”
