BVU Softball Team Receives Award for Volunteer Service

The Golden Shovel is awarded annually by Buena Vista County Habitat for Humanity to the BVU campus organization, club, or team whose involvement in building community has been the most extraordinary during the school year.

The Buena Vista University softball team was honored with Buena Vista County Habitat for Humanity’s first-ever Golden Shovel Award for volunteer service on May 18. The team logged more than 100 hours over the 2017-18 academic year.

The award – which represents BVU’s commitment to volunteering and community involvement – is awarded annually by Buena Vista County Habitat for Humanity to the campus organization, club, or team whose involvement in building community has been the most extraordinary during the school year.

The Golden Shovel Award was designed and constructed by David Boelter, professor of art at BVU, and will be housed in BVU Head Softball Coach Mandie Berneking’s office until next year’s honoree is announced.

“We wanted a tangible way to show our sincere appreciation to all those at BVU who provide service annually to our organization, which is how the idea of the Golden Shovel Award came about,” said Misty Sanderson, executive director of Buena Vista County Habitat for Humanity.

Other BVU organizations who volunteered for Buena Vista County Habitat for Humanity over the past academic year include ROTC, Student MOVE (Mobilizing Outreach & Volunteer Efforts), and ALPS (Adventure Leadership Program Scholars), as well as BVU’s wrestling team, basketball team, and football team.

“We are thankful to all of Buena Vista University for encouraging community involvement, and to the students and other local organizations who partner with us,” added Sanderson.
