Buena Vista University has selected Dr. Jim Salvucci as its vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty. He will carry the faculty rank of professor of English and will assume his new responsibilities this summer upon the departure of Dr. Barbara Byrne, who has held the position on an interim basis since January 2015.
Salvucci is currently the founding dean for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Stevenson University in Maryland, a position he has held since 2009. He joined the Stevenson faculty in 2001 and rose through the ranks to become professor of English language and literature. He has also taught English at Loyola University in Baltimore, The Catholic University of America and Trinity Washington University, both in Washington D.C., the University of Toronto and LaGuardia Community College in Queens, N.Y.
He is a member of the Bard College Board of Governors and the American Conference of Academic Deans Board, and he is a frequent conference presenter, blogger and commentator on a wide variety of topics. Salvucci is also active in the Baltimore, Md., community, serving on the board of directors for Community Mediation and the Public Justice Center. Additionally, he has held various roles in the South Baltimore Neighborhood Association.
"Dr. Salvucci is a highly accomplished educator, academic leader and community member. His experience in introducing new and successful programs, faculty governance and accreditation will serve him well in this new role. We are delighted to welcome him to the BVU community," said BVU President Fred Moore.
Salvucci earned his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and holds a master's degree from Queens College, City University of New York and a bachelor's degree from Bard College. He has also completed the Institute for Management and Leadership in Education at Harvard University Graduate School of Education and the Institute on General Education through the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
"I am both excited and proud to join the BVU community, and I look forward to working with President Moore, the faculty, staff and students to continue the BVU tradition of offering an education that is both transformational and practical," said Salvucci. "My experience as a founding dean at an institution with a similar tradition of excellence will aid our efforts to build upon the current BVU foundation and strengthen it to face future challenges and seize new opportunities while maintaining BVU's focus on student learning."
