Buena Vista University has named Dr. Barbara Byrne as its interim vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty. She began her duties on Monday, Jan. 12 and will serve in the position through the 2015-16 academic year.

Byrne is senior vice president emeritus for academic affairs at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, where she served for ten years. Since her retirement from the University of the Sciences in 2007, Byrne has worked as a higher education consultant for several institutions. She has also been an administrator and faculty member at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and Wells College in New York.

As part of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, she has chaired and served on accreditation teams, reviewed five-year interim reports and acted as a consultant for a newly-developing institution.

"Dr. Byrne is a highly accomplished academic administrator, scientist and teacher," said BVU President Fred Moore. "We are fortunate that she has agreed to join our community of learners."

Byrne holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University, where she specialized in genetics, zoology and bacteriology. She also earned her master's degree from Indiana University and her bachelor's degree in biology from Blackburn College.

"I am delighted to be joining the members of the BVU community as their interim chief academic officer. Working with the wonderful faculty and staff members at BVU, I am convinced that, together, we can move the institution forward in many important ways," said Byrne. "In partnership, I believe we can produce a plan to develop BVU from an already excellent university into one that is recognized for its unique programs and its effectiveness as a learning institution."
