BVU Hosts Special Olympics Athletes on Unified Sports Day

More than 100 Special Olympics Iowa athletes participated in a variety of fun activities with BVU coaches, staff, faculty, and students.

Buena Vista University hosted its sixth annual Unified Sports Day in partnership with Special Olympics Iowa on Thursday, Oct. 11 in Lamberti Recreation Center on the BVU campus.

More than 100 Special Olympics Iowa athletes participated in a variety of fun activities with BVU coaches, staff, faculty, and students. Activities included bowling, ladder golf, tee ball, cup stacking, and more. Each activity station was led by students in Jessy Smith's adaptive physical education course. Smith is an instructor of education-P.E. at BVU, and the students spent class time planning for the event. 

Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through sports training and competition experiences, Special Olympics Unified Sports creates an opportunity for people without intellectual disabilities to take part in activities alongside athletes with intellectual disabilities.
