Busy as Beavers this Month
BVU athletics teams and co-curriculars are staying busy this March with competitions taking place all month long.
March entered like a lamb on the lakeshore campus in Storm Lake. While I’m not sure whether the month will leave like a lion, I know this: March will feature Beavers throughout!
This month will likely be the busiest ever for athletic and co-curricular competition in the history of Buena Vista University. Seventeen BVU sports are set to compete in March, the result of creative scheduling that allows traditional Fall sports to compete during the Spring Semester as the American Rivers Conference works to mitigate spread of COVID-19.
Our football team will open its season at 6 p.m. Friday, March 26, against Simpson College on Peterson Field. That weekend alone BVU will compete in baseball, softball, golf, soccer, tennis, cheer and dance, and track and field. (See bvu.edu/athletics for a schedule of games you can stream.)
Volleyball, wrestling, and basketball teams are competing earlier in March. Students in co-curriculars such as esports and Livestock Show Team have participated or prepared for competition this month.
While you see our student-athletes and coaches in action on livestreams, there is a lot going on behind the scenes to make this possible. Our health and wellness staff and athletic trainers work around the clock to carry out COVID-19 surveillance testing before competitions, and to get our athletes ready to compete. Our athletics and facilities crews are in constant motion, clearing snow from fields, setting up venues for practices and events, and finding creative ways to livestream competitions. There are so many unsung heroes on our campus right now.
As people across the country receive vaccinations, we grow closer to resuming normal schedules. “Normal” for me, like many of you, involves cheering on the Beavers in activities that complement the rich academic experience our students receive.
Our students, student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and staff are grateful for all your support, prayers, and well wishes. I pray you’re doing well. I hope you and your family emerge from the pandemic healthy, determined, and eager to join me in person one day soon as we cheer on our B-E-A-V-E-R-S!
Sincerely,
Brian A. Lenzmeier, Ph.D.
