Accounting Major Enjoyed BVU Leadership Opportunities

After four years of life in Storm Lake, senior Alexis Keller is looking to start her next chapter in Omaha where she has accepted a position at an accounting firm. In the midst of it all, she is reflecting on the journey that led her here.

Coming out of Underwood High School in 2016, Alexis Keller picked Buena Vista University for its business and accounting programs.

“I knew I could get all the accounting classes and credentials I’d need and get them in four years,” Keller says.

There was another reason: “BVU felt like home,” she says.

Like many in the BVU Class of 2020, Keller has made a difference on campus and beyond. The Neola resident has completed internships with Linn & Associates in Chicago; Lincoln Savings Bank in Hudson; and Well’s Enterprise in Le Mars. She was in the midst of her fourth internship, serving the BVU Business Office, when COVID-19 reared its head and effectively closed campus in March.

“BVU felt like home.”

Keller, who played soccer for the Beavers, also served in the BVU Accounting and Business Association. She was part of the BVU Orientation Team and helped start the BVU Criminal Justice Club. She worked to help establish the BVU Out of State Student Union, a club whose members helped BVU’s out-of-state students become acclimated to life on campus and within Storm Lake.

“The Out of State Union did activities like visiting Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha,” Keller says. “We took a tour of Storm Lake restaurants and met monthly to help address any issues associated with students being homesick.”

Keller says she’ll miss the connections she made across campus, whether they were with new students, veteran professors, or her close friends. And while moving away from BVU and Storm Lake represents an adjustment, Alexis Keller is anxious to see what the next chapter in life promises. She already knows where it will begin, as she’s accepted an accounting position with RSM, an international accounting firm in Omaha.

“I start at RSM in August, which gives me time to begin my CPA exams over the summer,” Keller says.
