2018 Business Graduate Accepts Financial Advisor Position

Jacob Jensen, Class of 2018, transferred to Buena Vista University from a community college for business and finance in 2016, but little did he know his experiences and BVU connections would lead him to a job soon after graduation.

Before transferring to BVU, Jensen was unsure of how to apply the knowledge he would gain in the classroom to a business setting. When he found out all the opportunities BVU could offer him, he was excited. “Coming to BVU and discovering all of the learning that goes on in class and internship opportunities was unexpected, and I’m so grateful.”

During his college career, Jensen made the most out of the opportunities and connections available to him by interning with many different companies, engaging in organizations on campus, and traveling. In the summer of 2017, Jensen completed an internship with Iowa Falls State Bank where he applied skills in a little bit of everything from bookkeeping to lending and marketing. That following August, he participated in the Okoboji Entrepreneurial Institute followed by an internship at Central bank as a personal banking teller in the fall. One of his favorite memories was getting to know other students and staff like Mike Walker, assistant dean of students and director of student success, on an A Week of Offsite Learning (AWOL) trip over spring break, fighting human trafficking in Atlanta.

He also had the opportunity to go on a trip to Deere & Company (“John Deere” or “Deere”) in Moline, Ill. that was organized by the Harold Walter Siebens School of Business. While at John Deere’s headquarters, he and many of his fellow business classmates learned about John Deere’s business strategy, mission statement, and values, as well as how they apply those to their business practices. The group was even able to meet with their chief strategy officer as well as their finance and accounting department. Jensen says, “At BVU and on academic focused trips, students are learning how companies strategize in the classroom, then have the opportunity to actually see how they apply it to their value and mission.”

Thanks to connections from BVU’s Career and Personal Development office, Jensen landed an internship with Northwestern Mutual as a financial services intern after graduating in May. This experience led him to a full-time position as a financial advisor in Fort Dodge this fall. “My position with Northwestern Mutual has allowed me to help people achieve their life’s goals while utilizing the valuable knowledge and experiences I gained during my time at BVU," he says.
