Sherry Wassom
- Student Development Specialist
Sherry Wassom started working at Buena Vista University as an Administrative Assistant in 2012, and soon thereafter began the role of Academic Advisor. She is able to relate to the students she advises as she graduated from BVU in 2018, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in human services & organizational leadership and minors in psychology and sociology while working full-time. When it comes to learning, she says it is never too late!
“Being a non-traditional student myself, I am able to connect and understand the struggles that students have. I feel it is very important to build relationships, to lead by example, and to be understanding. The most rewarding experience as an advisor is when a student graduates. After the time you have spent getting to know them, and then seeing them in their cap and gown at graduation it is very exciting. Not only have they accomplished their goal, but I was able to be a part of it with them and watch them grow both educationally and personally.”
Wassom is married to her high school sweetheart and together they have two children, a granddaughter, and another grandchild on the way!
