Dr. Kyle Norris
- Director of Bands
Dr. Kyle Norris joined the Music Department at Buena Vista University in August 2023 as the Director of Bands. In this role, he is responsible for coordinating all instrumental ensembles on campus including the BVU Concert Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, and Pep Band. Dr. Norris also teaches private lessons for all brass instruments.
Prior to his appointment at BVU, Dr. Norris was an Associate Professor of Music at Williston State College in Williston, ND. During his ten years of teaching at WSC, Dr. Norris directed the WSC Concert Choir, City Band, and established the Williston State Community Orchestra. In addition to these ensembles, Dr. Norris taught a variety of music courses and applied lessons. In addition to his experiences at WSC, Dr. Norris also served as Interim Director of Bands and Brass Studies at Dickinson State University in Dickinson, ND in 2013.
Dr. Norris received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trumpet Performance from North Dakota State University (Fargo, ND) in 2012. In addition to his DMA, he holds a Master of Music degree from Ohio University (Athens, OH), and a Bachelor of Music degree from Indiana University (Bloomington, IN).
Along with his duties at BVU, Dr. Norris maintains an active schedule working as a clinician, directing regional honor bands, adjudicating, and performing. As a freelance performer, Dr. Norris has performed with numerous orchestras throughout the United States including the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, Fargo/Moorhead Orchestra and Opera, Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, Bloomington Pops, River City Symphony, and the Ohio Valley Symphony.
As a commercial performer, Dr. Norris has performed with the Jazz Arts Group of Fargo/Moorhead, Allen Carter Big Band, Everett Longstreth Orchestra, FM Kicks Band, and with artists including Wayne Bergeron, Doc Severinsen, and The Temptations. During the summer Dr. Norris serves as part of the artist teaching faculty at the International Music Camp. At IMC, he works with student ensembles, teaches a variety of classes, and performs during faculty recital events and with the IMC Faculty Big Band.
Dr. Norris’s teachers include Jeremy Brekke, John Schlabach, John Rommel, Dominic Spera, Bill Adam, and Vicki Hastings.
