Celebrating Our Graduates
Buena Vista University's commencement ceremonies will be held on Oct 11, 2020, on the Sunday of the 2020 BVU Homecoming celebration. These ceremonies are a wonderful time to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates.
Participate in our Virtual Celebration!
In the spirit of soon receiving your diploma, cap and gown, and graduation gift in the mail, we believe it’s the perfect time to hold an end-of-year virtual celebration. The celebration will take the form of a virtual video ceremony on June 20. To participate in our virtual ceremony, provide some basic information and submit a photo of yourself. The submission deadline is June 10 at noon.
- Virtual Commencement Q&A
What if I don’t want to participate in this virtual celebration?
Graduating students will not be required to participate in the virtual ceremony—if you do not wish to participate in a virtual ceremony, you still will have the opportunity to attend a future in-person ceremony.
What is a virtual celebration?
This virtual Commencement celebration will include many of the same components as our traditional ceremony, with messages from the Interim President, student speaker—and most importantly, the recognition of individual graduates.
When will the virtual celebration happen and how do I watch it?
Graduating students, parents, faculty, and all staff will receive a link to the video on June 20.
What will the October Commencement experience entail?
At our Oct. 11 Commencement, you may participate in the traditional morning Baccalaureate service in Schaller Memorial Chapel, before lining up for one of the most memorable marches through the Victory Arch!
You have the opportunity to walk across the stage and hear your name being called in front of your friends, family, and BVU community.

Buena Vista University’s 129th Commencement ceremony has been moved to Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020.
The move occurs as a result of the BVU campus being closed this spring in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Commencement was originally scheduled to take place on May 23, 2020.
This is an unprecedented time not only for BVU, but for our country and the world. The University closed campus in March and successfully transitioned all classes to an online format. Our students, staff, and faculty have all responded, doing everything possible to advance learning and discovery for our students while observing social distancing measures to keep people and our communities safe.
Commencement represents so many incredible things to our graduates, their families, their professors, and everyone associated with their remarkable journey through BVU. This is their time to celebrate, to share in the excitement and heartfelt emotion as one journey gives way to another. We want to honor all the members of this resilient class for the ways in which they’ve so proudly represented BVU, and then help send them on to the challenges that await as they depart to make their mark on a world that desperately needs their energy, their optimism, and their commitment to serve others.
We cannot wait to join the Class of 2020, taking part in our traditional Baccalaureate service the morning of Sunday, Oct. 11, in Schaller Memorial Chapel, before lining up for one of the most memorable marches through the Victory Arch.
