Are You Registered?

How to register and update your registration

Start by confirming your voter registration status and location. If you have an Iowa Driver's License or Non-Operator ID, you can register with your Buena Vista University address to vote in Buena Vista County or use your Iowa hometown address to vote in your home county.

If you don’t have an Iowa license or are from out of state, you can still register using your BVU address to vote in Buena Vista County (Iowa) or register in your home state to vote there.

Voter Registration Deadlines
Voter registration deadlines are for the November 05, 2024 election. 

  • Online registration deadline: Monday, October 21, 2024
  • Register by mail deadline: Must be postmarked by Monday, October 21, 2024
  • In person registration deadline: Tuesday, November 5, 2024

Register to Vote in Iowa

The pre-registration deadline is 5 p.m., Monday, October 21. After that date, anyone wishing to vote, either absentee or at the polls, must go through the Election Day Registration process. Students should register ASAP, especially if you want to request an absentee ballot. You want to give yourself as much time as possible. 

All students living on campus can register using their BVU address to vote in Buena Vista County. 

If you miss this pre-registration period, you can register in person when you go vote at the polls. 

Register to Vote

With an Iowa Driver's License or Non-Operator ID

Without an Iowa License (Out-of-State Students)

  • You can still pre-register in Iowa by mail:
  1. Print and fill out the voter registration form.
  2. Use your BVU address and the last 4 digits of your SSN.
  3. Sign and mail/deliver the form to the Buena Vista County Auditor, 317 E. 5th Street, P.O. Box 220, Storm Lake, IA 50588.
  4. You will receive a Voting ID Card, which allows you to vote by absentee or in person.

Registering in Person at Poll (in Iowa)

  • If you miss the pre-registration period, you can register in-person when you go vote in person. If you prefer to vote in person, you can simply plan to vote early (starting October 5th) up until Election Day on November 5.
  • At the polling location, you must prove both who you are and where you live. See the ID and Proof of Residence requirements and contact us with any questions.

Voting Information

Absentee Ballot

 

  • Request your Absentee Ballot BEFORE October 24
    • You need to request a ballot by filling out this form and mailing it in. You will then receive your ballot by mail. Do this ASAP!
  • Print and fill out your ballot
    • Once you receive your ballot in the mail, fill it out using the correct address.
  • Mail it in before election day! Follow the return instructions on your ballot carefully.

Vote In Person


You can vote in person starting October 5 until November 5 on Election Day. If you have not pre-registered, you can register in person at the polls.

Voting Outside Iowa
If you register to vote in your home state, you will likely need to vote by mail/absentee. Contact us if you need help figuring out this process!
