BVU Students Create Disney Documentary

A labor of love encompassing 3.5 years, thousands of miles in travel, and 36 students came to fruition with the premiere of “Growing Magic: The Mickey Mouse Cornfield Story," a 60-minute documentary written and produced by BVU DIGI students. The documentary shows how a 520-acre “card” to celebrate the 60th birthday of Mickey Mouse generated international news and acclaim for the Walt Disney Company and hundreds of northern Iowa residents that made it happen.

Olivia's DIGI Experience

Olivia took full advantage of her DIGI experience! She was a paid intern as a reporter at the Pulitzer Prize-winning Storm Lake Times, co-editor of The Tack, a Game Day intern for the Minnesota Vikings, and involved in productions at BVTV and KBVU stations. In her final semester, she interned at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C.!

“The people at BVU helped me do what I was able to accomplish. I got so much experience during my four years of college. It’s what I needed to do this job. I’m excited. I’m ready.”

A Valuable Internship

Omar's paid internship with KAYL in Storm Lake positioned him for a future in broadcasting. His position involved playing commercials, listening for directives from play-by-play broadcasters, and making sure all went as planned. He was grateful for the change to improve his radio skills, keeping him in the loop while creating connections.

“With an internship, it gives you time to see if the field you are going into is really what you want to do. It gives you a crash course on it. It gives you a chance to see what the world may be like for you.”

Creating the BVU Quiz Bowl

“Buena Vista University Quiz Bowl,” an Iowa Quiz Bowl League academic competition in a game-show style setting, features teams from 20 Iowa high schools. The show provides real-life work experience for nearly a dozen DIGI students!

“The value of producing ‘Quiz Bowl’ gives students real hands-on opportunities with real outcomes. Productions and projects like this prepare our students for leadership roles that will make them marketable in the media."

Brothers with Toy Story toys

You've Got a Friend in BV

Inspired by the magic of Pixar, brothers Morgan and Mason McGrew have spent years working on a creation of their own... and now their full live-action recreation of Toy Story 3 is complete. The live-action recreation of the Disney/Pixar film premiered on campus.

Both Morgan and Mason chose to attend BVU because of the digital media program and creative leadership opportunities it provides. They also identified with the passion professors hold for their profession.
