Remembering Dr. Al Lewis

Dr. Al Lewis has passed away at 78. He was well-known at Buena Vista as a professor and coach who emphasized the "education in physical education."

Dr. Al Lewis, professor emeritus of health and physical education, passed away on Feb. 22, 2018. He was 78.
 
Lewis served on the Buena Vista College faculty from 1970 until his retirement in 1988. In the 1970s, he was head of the physical education department and director of intramural programs. Lewis was well-known as a professor who emphasized the “education in physical education.”
 
In athletics, Lewis was assistant football coach from 1970-1989. He coordinated defense for the Beavers and acted as interim head coach during the 1983 season. Lewis also served as track & field coach, earning Iowa Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1984. He was inducted into the BVU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.

Visitation will be held at the Fratzke Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Thursday, May 10 from 5-7:30 p.m. A celebration of life service will be held at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church on Friday, May 11 at 3 p.m. Immediately following the service, all are welcome to continue the celebration at Lake Creek Country Club. Food and drink will be served.

In lieu of flowers, the Lewis family asks you to consider a donation to The Dr. Al Lewis Endowment at Buena Vista University. The family will match all donations dollar-for-dollar up to a total of $15,000.
