Pitcher Thankful for Her Time with the Beavers

Rounding out her senior year, Marissa Promes saw a winning softball career in her time at BVU. She now looks ahead at her teaching career as graduation draws near.

Some of Marissa Promes’ most teachable moments may have come within the pitcher’s circle at Buena Vista University. The Jefferson native won 12 games in two seasons for the Beavers, throwing 192 innings in the process.

“One highlight I remember is a March series we had in Illinois,” says Promes, a who majors in mathematics education. “It felt like it was below zero outside and we beat a ranked team.”

The game was part of a 4-0 trip to Illinois to begin Promes last go-around on the softball diamond. There were other highlights, of course. Promes won eight games for a team that won 21 total in 2018, the most victories for BVU in softball in 17 years.

“It’s a super friendly environment at BVU. It was easy to meet people. And I really liked the education program.”

The lessons should serve Promes, who will coach middle school softball this summer at her alma mater, the Greene County Community School District in Jefferson. After that stint, she’ll head to the MVAO-COU Community School District, where she’s been tabbed as the middle school math teacher in Anthon.

“I like middle school students,” Promes says. “I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Promes, who recently finishing a student-teaching assignment at Sioux Central Middle School, says she enjoyed her time as a Beaver. She liked playing for Coach Mandie Nocita and wearing the BVU Blue & Gold.

“It’s a super friendly environment at BVU,” she says. “It was easy to meet people. And I really liked the education program. I’ll miss all my friends and the close-knit community we had.”
