Mason City Alum Wins Beaver Gift Basket

Iowa State Fair booth boosts BVU visibility

Congratulations to Dirk Bruns ’91, of Mason City, winner of the alumni gift basket awarded following the Iowa State Fair.

Dirk visited the Iowa State Fair with his family and was proud to stop by the BVU booth and sign the popular alumni wall.

“It was great seeing the BVU booth at the State Fair,” Dirk said. “I told our granddaughter, who was with us, that BV was my school!”

Dirk grew up on a farm near Woden, Iowa. Following a brief career in farming during the early 1980s, he attended North Iowa Area Community College and then matriculated to Buena Vista through the site at NIACC in Mason City. It was very convenient to attend a four-year college while raising a family of three, he noted.

He currently serves as Senior Lending Officer at the North Iowa Community Credit Union in Mason City.

“I love being in this profession, working to help people find solutions that allow them to reach their personal and professional goals,” he said.

In addition to his work, Dirk is a member of the Knight of Columbus, a member of Mason City Exchange Club, and has worked as a soccer official refereeing club games, and for high school contests in Minnesota and Iowa, and those in the collegiate ranks. He worked in that capacity for more than 17 years and had the good fortune to work state tournaments and even a match at his alma mater, Buena Vista University.

“It was beautiful being on campus and working a game,” he said.
