BVU Student Wins Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences

The promos, entitled, "BVTV: For Beavers By Beavers," were created using stop motion animation and motion graphics and took McGrew approximately five months to complete.

Buena Vista University student, Morgan McGrew, is the winner of a coveted Student Crystal Pillar Award from the Upper Midwest Emmy Chapter. McGrew, a senior digital media major from Ankeny, won the award for a series of promos he created for BVU’s campus television station, BVTV.

The promos, entitled, “BVTV: For Beavers By Beavers,” were created using stop motion animation and motion graphics and took McGrew approximately five months to complete. The 30-second spots highlight BVTV’s offerings through the narration of a character known as Buddy Beaver, who was assembled using clay and parts of disassembled vintage toys.

“I was inspired to create them from my love of animation,” said McGrew. “I went into it wanting to create something ambitious and great. I wanted to see how far I could enhance the production.”

McGrew, who plans to pursue a job in marketing or communications after graduating from BVU in May, added, “I feel super proud. A lot of intense patience and handiwork went into these promos. I'm so glad they were received so well.”

McGrew was presented with the award at the 2018 Student Production Awards ceremony in Minneapolis on April 13. This annual competition recognizes excellence in media productions for college students in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and western Wisconsin.

The series of McGrew’s “BVTV: For Beavers By Beavers” promos can be viewed below or on BVTV’s YouTube channel.
