BVU, HMS schools unite in Strategic Partnership

A Strategic Partnership between Buena Vista University and the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District creates opportunities for HMS employees and their family members to earn their degree.

Buena Vista University (BVU) and the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District (HMS CSD) have united in a Strategic Partnership, working together to create opportunities within their local communities.

This partnership allows for employees of HMS CSD, as well as eligible family members of full-time employees, to receive grant funding to lower the overall cost of education while enrolled in classes at BVU’s Storm Lake campus. Partner grant funding also lowers the cost per credit hour for students enrolled in BVU’s convenient online/hybrid undergraduate programs or the organizational leadership graduate program.

BVU professors and staff are also available for training programs, workshops, and more should officials with HMS CSD seek those services and expertise.

“Our Strategic Partnership with Buena Vista University is a great benefit for our staff and their family members as they can pursue opportunities to enhance their education and careers,” says HMS CSD Superintendent Patrick Carlin. “We look forward to supporting individuals as they use this benefit, helping to strengthen their skills and our local communities.”

The HMS CSD has 115 employees and educates approximately 650 students in grades PK-12. The district serves the local communities and surrounding areas of Hartley, Melvin, Sanborn, and May City.

“My time at BVU, both for my graduate degree and my undergraduate degree, were excellent,” says HMS Elementary School Instructional Coach and TLC Coordinator Lindsey Maris. “When I decided to go back to school to get my master’s degree, BVU was my first choice. From the time I applied to the time I graduated things went as smoothly as possible. I was even able to work with some of the same faculty members I worked with when I was earning my bachelor’s degree, and they remembered me.”

“Building our communities starts with supporting education,” says BVU Director of Strategic Partnerships Laura Todd. “Through our partnership with the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District, we will work together to invest in our communities.”
