Buena Vista University's Professional School Counseling Program to Present at Iowa School Counselor Association Annual Conference

Buena Vista University's Professional School Counseling Program is set to host multiple presentations at this year’s Iowa School Counselor Association Conference, which will take place November 5 through 7 in Des Moines.

Key faculty members and a recent graduate from Buena Vista University’s Professional School Counseling Master of Science in Education Program will be presenting at the upcoming 2023 Iowa School Counselor Association (ISCA) Conference. The conference, themed "Lighting the Future," will take place from November 5 to 7 in Des Moines.

Dr. Renee Fensom, the Program Director of Buena Vista University’s Professional School Counseling Program, will be co-presenting a session titled "Counseling Biracial Students: Nurturing Identity and Well-Being" alongside recent graduate and counselor for Earlham Community School District, Crystal Hale, M.S.Ed. `23. "I am especially excited to co-present with recent graduate and BVU’s Graduate Student of the Year award, Crystal Hale,” said Dr. Fensom. “The multiracial population is the fastest growing group in the United States, yet there is a limited focus on their experiences and needs. We are thrilled to address this topic, helping to advocate for the well-being of all students."

Another presentation, titled "Lighting the Future with the Wisdom of the Past," will be delivered by Dr. Kris Meyer, an Instructor of Professional School Counseling at Buena Vista University. Dr. Meyer's session will explore the importance of incorporating historical knowledge into future counseling practices.

Additionally, a panel consisting of Dr. Kris Meyer, Dr. Amy DeGroot-Hammer (Adjunct Professor of Professional School Counseling), and Dr. Jenna Hardersen (Adjunct Professor of Professional School Counseling) will present "Show & Tell: Tried and True K-8 Classroom Instruction Ideas for School Counselors." This interactive session will provide practical ideas for effective classroom instruction.

The Iowa School Counseling Association supports and advocates for school counselors across the state, ensuring that they can implement counseling programs aligned with the American School Counseling Association National Model.

Buena Vista University counseling alumni attending the ISCA conference are invited to a social hour event at Ricochet on Monday, November 6, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. This gathering will provide an opportunity for networking and reconnecting with fellow alumni. To attend, alumni are requested to register through the provided link.
