Ben Pullen
- Director of Institute of Agriculture
Ben Pullen currently serves as the Director of the Institute of Agriculture at Buena Vista University, where he leads initiatives to advance agricultural education, science, business, communications, and leadership. A lifelong farmer from Northwest Iowa, Ben grew up on a small farm raising corn, soybeans, and sheep. After the tragic loss of his father in an accident at age 16, he developed a deep appreciation for the resilience and dedication required in agriculture. His experiences led him to pursue both education and farming, blending his passion for teaching with hands-on agricultural leadership.
With a background in both education and agriculture, Ben connects with students in meaningful ways, whether in the classroom, through hands-on agricultural experiences, or in mentorship roles. His work emphasizes not only technical knowledge but also leadership development, helping students build the confidence and skills needed for success in agricultural and educational careers. He is also deeply interested in agricultural policy, advocating for policies that support farmers, rural communities, and the next generation of agricultural professionals.
Beyond his role at BVU, Ben has been actively involved in agricultural and youth development organizations. He has served on the county Farm Bureau Board for 13 years, participated in the State Young Farmer Advisory Committee, and played a key role in Ag in the Classroom activities. Previously, he supported statewide youth programs as the Iowa 4-H Senior Field Manager with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. On his family farm, Ben, alongside his family, raises livestock, vegetables, and hay, with a focus on direct marketing to consumers and supporting youth in 4-H and FFA. His commitment to education, agriculture, and policy advocacy makes him a strong voice for the future of agriculture.
