Buena Vista University appears to be capable of getting a message out to virtually 100 percent of its students within minutes if an emergency happens on its campus.

The Buena Vista University Vocal Jazz Ensemble will present its annual Jazz Show, Thursday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

BVU's ninth annual Scholars Day was held on April 29. The day provided students from all disciplines the opportunity to present original research and other academic work in an interactive and intellectually engaging environment.

The Buena Vista University Theatre presented its Spring production of "Don't Dress for Dinner" in April. Audiences were entertained by the two-act farce by French playwright Marc Camoletti.

A spring break trip to Haiti allowed BVU students the opportunity to volunteer with impoverished children living in an orphanage. While there, they played games with the children and handed out toys and other items.

Buena Vista University honored over 200 students for outstanding accomplishments in academics and leadership at the annual Student Recognition Dinner on April 27.

Buena Vista University's student newspaper The Tack has placed 2nd in the nation for best Online News Web site in the 2012-13 Society for Collegiate Journalists national media contest.

The annual celebration of Latino heritage, "Fiesta Latina," will be held at Chautauqua Park on April 28. The event will feature games, food, music and activities for all ages, and is coordinated by RAICES, a student organization at BVU.

The BVU Computer Science department hosted its first-ever "Capture the Flag" hacking challenge. As part of the 24-hour challenge, each team of students defended their own virtual server while trying to infiltrate other teams' servers.

Eighteen Buena Vista University science students attended the annual meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science April 19-20 at Simpson College and made 19 poster and oral presentations.

Several BVU students traveled to Seattle over spring break, where they volunteered at two non-profit organizations. They helped prepare and serve for the homeless, and packaged over 14,000 pounds of food for the hungry.

Several students spent Spring Break in Arizona, where they camped and volunteered at the largest Indian reservation in the United States. The group assisted with farm maintenance and gardening projects.
