BVU Announces New Local Scholarship Partnership with Tyson Foods

Beginning this fall, BVU will match scholarship aid for the children of Tyson Foods employees in Storm Lake, as well as scholarships awarded through the Tyson Family Foundations.

On Monday, July 1, Buena Vista University announced two new BVU scholarship opportunities for students with parents or guardians employed at Tyson Foods.

Tyson Foods’ Storm Lake plant currently offers $1,000 in scholarship aid for employees’ children intending to apply to BVU. Beginning Fall 2019, BVU will match the gift resulting in a $2,000 one-time scholarship for qualifying selected students. A student who is eligible to compete for the scholarship must complete the BVU application from Tyson and notify their BVU admissions counselor that they have applied for the Tyson scholarship. Once BVU is notified by Tyson of the winner(s), and the student and his/her family have filed their FAFSA, BVU will match the scholarship.

“BVU is a valued member of the Storm Lake community and we appreciate their generosity and commitment to supporting college education goals for our team members’ families.”

Rick Retzlaff, plant manager

BVU President Joshua D. Merchant says, “It’s an incredible commitment in making college more affordable for students from Storm Lake and the area—an investment in our community and its future as doors are opened for hard-working parents and their children.”

BVU also announced plans to match scholarships awarded through the Tyson Family Foundation, which offers a $6,000 per year scholarship for children of Tyson Foods’ employees who apply and are selected. For recipients of the Tyson Family Foundation scholarship who are attending BVU, this amount will be doubled.

“BVU is a valued member of the Storm Lake community and we appreciate their generosity and commitment to supporting college education goals for our team members’ families,” stated Rick Retzlaff, plant manager, Tyson Foods Storm Lake. “Today more than ever, we know families are challenged in finding sufficient resources to fund college and associated expenses, and we are thrilled to see additional opportunities as a result of BVU’s investment.”

Students with parents or legal guardians employed at Tyson Foods in Storm Lake are encouraged to apply for either scholarship. Tyson team members looking for more information should speak with their HR representative.
