Buena Vista University proudly recognizes Marian Riner, Program Director and Assistant Professor of Social Work, as the recipient of the 2026 George Wythe Award, the University's highest honor for teaching excellence.

Before joining BVU, Riner spent 20 years practicing social work in Arkansas, Texas, and Iowa, with experience in hospice care, services for homeless students, and work with children and families in the foster care system. Since arriving at BVU, she has helped expand the Social Work program by leading the creation of the University's first Social Work minor and developing its online Social Work program.

Known for her dedication to students, Riner challenges them to think critically, engage with complex issues, and grow as professionals and individuals. Her impact is reflected in the many students she has mentored throughout her career.

When asked what she hopes students carry with them after graduation, Riner said, "I hope students remain true to their ethics, advocate for vulnerable groups, build into the profession, and be lifelong learners."

Riner also draws inspiration from the next generation of changemakers. "I am most inspired by a younger population that is challenging systems that aren't working and finding creative solutions to complex problems," she said. "The next generation is full of grit and determination."

Reflecting on the award, Riner shared, "Being selected as a Wythe Laureate is a tremendous honor. Hearing how former students continue to be impacted by my teaching is both humbling and rewarding."

Through her leadership, mentorship, and commitment to Education for Service, Riner has made a lasting impact on BVU and its students. The University is proud to recognize her as the 2026 George Wythe Award recipient.
