Barnes Recognized as BVU's Senior of the Year

Mary Barnes, a marketing major, earns the 2021 Senior of the Year Award. The award is given to an outstanding senior who shows leadership and makes an impact during their time at BVU.

Buena Vista University recognized 43 students at its Senior Recognition Celebration on April 25. This annual event symbolizes BVU's pride for student achievements and honors those of leadership and academic excellence.

At the event, Mary Barnes was recognized as BVU's Senior of the Year. This honor is given by the BVU National Alumni Association to an outstanding senior who has demonstrated, throughout his or her college career, exceptional academic achievement, impressive leadership characteristics both in and out of the classroom, and the ability to set personal and career goals that have impacted not only their own lives, but also those around them.

"At Buena Vista University, we take great pride in the accomplishments of our students and acknowledge the support of friends and family who have encouraged these students to achieve their greatest potential," says Dr. Brian Lenzmeier, BVU President.

During her years at BVU, the marketing major from Peterson was active in BVU's new Rodeo Team and women's basketball. She was a recipient of the Clifford A. Rae Academic Achievement Award, which is given to 18 high-performing students each year from the Harold Walter Siebens School of Business and the School of Science.

Future plans for Barnes include an internship with the Bridge of Storm Lake during May Term and a one-month mission trip to Cuba. After returning from her mission trip to Cuba, she plans to stay in the United States until leaving mid-October to teach English as a foreign language in either Costa Rica or Nicaragua. She also plans to travel with her dad's rodeo company throughout the summer as the hired timer.
