Music at BVU

Find Your Sound. Find Your Community.

You don't have to major in music to make it a meaningful part of your college experience. At Buena Vista University, students from majors across campus come together to perform, create, travel, and share their love of music.

Whether you've been performing for years or simply want to continue making music in college, you'll find opportunities to get involved and a community ready to welcome you.

Make Music at BVU

Music at BVU is about more than performing. It's an opportunity to build friendships, challenge yourself, develop your talents, and create memorable college experiences. Choose from vocal and instrumental ensembles that match your interests and make music fit into your BVU experience.

Choir

Share your passion for singing through the BVU Concert Choir and Vista Singers. Perform in settings ranging from Schaller Chapel and campus events to performances beyond BVU.

Concert Band

Continue playing your instrument while performing a variety of music with fellow BVU students. The Concert Band performs throughout the academic year and provides opportunities for students from across campus to stay involved in music.

Jazz Band & Rock Ensemble

Explore different musical styles and performance experiences through BVU's Jazz Band and Rock Ensemble. These groups give students additional opportunities to perform, collaborate, and develop as musicians.

Marching Blue

Bring the energy on game day as part of the Marching Blue. Perform during the football season and help create the atmosphere surrounding Beaver football and the lakeside stadium experience.

Blue Steel Pep Band

Turn up the energy at Beaver basketball games as a member of Blue Steel. The pep band combines music, school spirit, and the excitement of BVU Athletics.

Color Guard

Add a visual dimension to the Marching Blue through BVU Color Guard. Perform with flags and other equipment while bringing movement, color, and Beaver spirit to game day.

Music Scholarships

Your musical talents can help make a BVU education more affordable.

Music scholarships are available to eligible first-year students on BVU's Storm Lake campus who participate in University music programs. You do not need to be a music major to participate and be considered for music scholarship opportunities.

Students on Trip

Take Your Music Beyond Campus

Your BVU music experience can take you well beyond Storm Lake.

In May 2025, students in the BVU Concert Band and Concert Choir traveled to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania for an international performance tour. Students performed for audiences across the Baltics while experiencing new places and cultures together.

Perform Alongside the Pros

BVU students have opportunities to learn from and collaborate with accomplished professional musicians.

Students in the BVU Concert Choir performed with nationally acclaimed vocal ensemble Cantus and participated in a clinic with the group. BVU students also recorded the University Alma Mater during the experience, with music production students helping produce the recording.

Experiences like these give students opportunities to learn, collaborate, and put their skills into practice.
