Student Refund Information
We know you have a lot of questions regarding potential tuition, room, and board refunds, and we appreciate your patience while we waited for state and federal guidance on such matters.
We are happy to share that we will be providing room and board refunds, and the process for calculating the amounts mirrors that of many other institutions. Our process can be found on our Business Office page.
Next Steps for Student Room and Board Refunds
While a decision has been made regarding BVU room and board refunds, we don’t have exact answers for each individual student at this time considering each student’s unique financial aid and payment situation. We also need to consider scholarship, state aid, federal loans, and other aid.
We will email each student individually with more information in the next two weeks. Move-outs are not permitted at this time. Please be patient as we develop a safe, efficient way for students and families to return to campus.
Please note that there will be no tuition refund, as courses have moved forward online. Tuition is necessary to cover Buena Vista University’s ongoing operations, including retaining the faculty and staff needed to provide virtual instruction and online student support services. BVU faculty continue to deliver quality instruction virtually, which allows students to receive course credit and stay on their educational path toward degree completion and graduation. Tuition is linked to the award of academic credit, which students will earn by completing their continued instruction online.
Student Withdrawal Information
If you are a student that withdrew at any point during the spring or fall semester of 2020, and your withdrawal was due to issues related to COVID-19, please notify us within 30 days of your withdrawal. When you notify us, please provide specifics of the reason for your withdrawal and we will follow up.

- Room and Board Refund Q&A
When will I know if I will receive a grant?
Communication will be going out to every residential, Storm Lake student in the next few weeks regarding what, and if, they can expect as a grant.
Who can I reach out to if I have more questions about a refund?
If a student has questions, please email the Business office at email@example.com. We will work diligently to get your questions answered as soon as possible.
If I was receiving federal work-study, can I continue to get checks even though I am not working?
No. Although the government is allowing Universities to pay out federal work-study funds without students working, the University is only allotted a certain amount from the federal government to cover work-study payments to students, and those funds have already been expensed.
Will I be getting a refund on tuition now that we are online and online rates are cheaper?
No. There will be no refund for tuition as courses will move forward as planned, but in an online format.
Will we be getting refunded course fees we were charged?
Course fees will be evaluated, and students who may receive a refund will be notified.
I will not be able to pay my bill at this time. What are my options?
Please contact the Business Office via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. We are willing to work with you to provide some options.
Can I move out of my residence hall after I receive my refund?
Move-outs are not permitted at this time. Please be patient as we develop a safe, efficient way for students and families to return to campus.
What happens to my BeaverBucks that I did not use?
BeaverBucks are part of your total board plan charge. This charge is part of the refund calculation being done. Please refer to the process on the Business Office website. BeaverBucks as part of your board plan will not roll over to the next year. If you purchased additional BeaverBucks through the Business Office and are graduating or leaving BVU, please contact the Business Office at email@example.com and we will look into it for you.
On March 27, 2020, Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which provided emergency aid funds to institutions of higher education. BVU signed and returned the certification and agreement form to provide emergency financial aid grants to students. These funds are designed to assist residential and commuter Storm Lake students only in covering expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19. As of May 14, 2020, BVU distributed $548,900 of the funds to all 624 eligible students.
Our Health Services & Wellness office is open via phone and/or email for students who have been approved to stay on campus. Please do not visit our office, instead call or email us.
Students can contact us Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.: 712.749.1238 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Please contact campus security if you have a health need after hours and weekends.
If you believe you may have been exposed to COVID-19 and/or are showing symptoms, you must complete our Health Screening Form. After completing this form, please contact Health Services or Campus Security for next steps. A determination will be made whether isolation is necessary.
Any student identified for isolation will be moved to a residence hall away from other students.
Health Services and/or other Student Success staff will ensure that all medical and personal needs are met, including but not limited to monitoring of symptoms, medications, food, and other essentials. Students in isolation will be given a Coronavirus Kit and will be required to complete the Health Services Daily Illness Reporting Form as directed by Health Services & Wellness staff.
Mental Health Counseling Services is moving service delivery to telemental health (online) through Zoom counseling sessions or consultations.
Email Gina Hartman to set up an appointment. Students already receiving services will be contacted by their provider with instructions for how to resume services online. We invite all students to take advantage of these services, and are extending our counseling services to be available to Extended University Program (online, hybrid, and graduate) students during this time.
Center for Academic Excellence
Students can sign up for online tutoring appointments here. If you have any difficulties, please email Donna Musel. Online tutoring is also available through the Smart Thinking link in canvas course pages. If you already have prescheduled appointments, please work with Donna Musel to make sure these are updated to virtual meetings.
Career and Leadership Development
Career and Leadership Development will continue supporting our students, especially graduating seniors who are in the midst of job searches and graduate school applications. Whether you’re questioning your major, updating your resume, or practicing for an interview, email us to schedule a virtual meeting. We also available to help with internship, employment, or graduate school applications.
