Alumni Cheer On Beavers During Ballroom Brawl

Beavers continue to build as alumni connect with wrestling coaches and student-athletes in popular Ballroom Brawl setting in Siebens Forum.

Max Mashek punctuated an exciting evening for the Beaver wrestling program as he earned a pin with two seconds left in the first period of his 165-pound match on Feb. 3 as BVU hosted the popular Ballroom Brawl.

Mashek recorded his sixth fall on the season in pinning Simpson’s Trey Kellow. The match played out mere feet from Mashek’s father, BVU wrestling Hall-of-Famer Tom Mashek ’93.

“It was great seeing Max get a fall as a high-scoring first period came to a close,” said Sean White, BVU Head Wrestling Coach. “Our fans really pumped up the volume in the Ballroom at that point!”

“We came back a little early which gave us the chance to connect in the Science Center with Dr. Nathan Backman (Associate Professor of Computer Science) before the match. I loved the atmosphere at the Ballroom Brawl and enjoyed getting the chance to talk with Coach White and the guys on our team.”

Dr. Brian Broll, 2013 BVU graduate

Wrestling alumni Wade Hammen ’07, Ty Seaman ’86, and Dr. Brian Broll ’13 were also on hand for the festivities, which included a social hour before the match in Cru5h Dining inside Siebens Forum.

“Cassie (Sinclair ’13) and I loved coming back to campus this weekend,” said Broll, who majored in mathematics and earned four berths in the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Tournament.

Following the match, Broll shared a few pointers with BVU’s 133-pounder Nolan Nguyen, who won his match, 15-9, in come-from-behind fashion.

“The pointers Brian shared were eye-opening and the experience was awesome,” Nguyen said. “Brian showed me something new, and I certainly will add to my arsenal, especially seeing the credibility he has with all his accomplishments.

“I had this odd feeling of excitement and pride as a successful alumnus greeted me after the dual,” Nguyen added. “He stopped to show me something that was worthwhile. It ties in with what Coach White has going for our team, and that is to, ‘Keep Building.’”
