Kirkholm Wins BVU's Education for Service Award

May. 28, 2012

The 12th annual Education for Service award was presented to Mark Kirkholm during Buena Vista University’s annual Faculty/Staff Recognition Dinner held May 25.

Kirkholm is the director of campus security and the interim associate dean of students. Since 1999, he has been responsible for the safety and security of the campus as well as emergency management. In June 2011, Kirkholm was named interim associate dean of students. Within this role, he oversees BVU’s Health Services, Counseling Services, Student Activities, Office of Intercultural Programs, the Department of Intramurals, Recreation and Outdoor Adventure, and the Department of Civic Engagement. Kirkholm is also responsible for judicial affairs.

“I am very honored, humbled and appreciative that colleagues and administration felt I was worthy of this award,” says Kirkholm. “I absolutely love working with students, and watching them grow and find their direction.”

“Mark Kirkholm works tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of the BVU community, especially our students,” says Dr. David Evans, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty. “He is essentially on-call all day, every day, and meets the various challenges of his position with wisdom and good humor. The fact that he—the chief security officer on campus—is well-beloved by the student body speaks volumes about his sense of fairness and justice, as well as his positive, constructive approach to problem-solving and discipline. He is a wise counselor and a calm presence, and he richly deserves the Education for Service award.”

John and Connie Klockentager established the Education for Service award in 1998 to annually honor a faculty or staff member who demonstrates an outstanding work ethic and is valued as a role model within the BVU community. John Klockentager is a former vice president for enrollment services at BVU.

It was also announced at the dinner that students at the Storm Lake campus selected Dr. Brian Lenzmeier, associate professor of biology, as Faculty Member of the Year, and Dr. Ashley Farmer-Hanson, director of civic engagement, as Staff Member of the Year.

BVU’s New Century Faculty Development Award for Research and Creative Work, which acknowledges and honors the valuable research and important creative work done by BVU faculty members, went to David Boelter, associate professor of art, and to Lenzmeier.

This year’s advising award, which recognizes faculty whose advising serves as an exemplar of dedication and student success, was presented to Beth Blankers, assistant professor of accounting, and Dr. Bethany Larson, associate professor of theatre.

“Faculty Member of the Year” awards in BVU’s Graduate & Professional Studies program were also presented at the dinner.
