Buena Vista University Names Two New Trustees

Jun. 14, 2012

The Buena Vista University Board of Trustees has announced that two new trustees have been elected to the Board.

They are:

Mark L. McManigal, Newport Beach, Calif., a partner with Claritas Capital, a private equity firm focused on growth equity investments and mezzanine debt investments.

Mark R. Peterson, Dakota Dunes, S.D., president of Peterson Management Co., a holding company for several family businesses including a 20,000-acre farming operation and several private equity investments.  He is also principal and board member of Liberty National Bank of Dakota Dunes.

“We look forward to their involvement in the life of Buena Vista University,” says BVU President Fred Moore. “Their interest in the success of our students and their wealth of experience in their respective professions will offer valuable new perspectives to board dialogue on key issues that will have an important impact on the future of Buena Vista.”

Mark McManigal, a native of Mason City, is a 1983 graduate (business administration) of the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  In 1985, he earned a law degree at the University of Iowa College of Law.

McManigal began his career as a lawyer in Des Moines and joined Edgewater Private Equity Funds as a partner from 1996 through 2004.  He was also an investment banker from 2005 through 2008 where he focused on middle market companies, most recently with Barrington Associates, which was purchased by Wells Fargo in 2006.

McManigal joined Claritas Capital in 2009 and manages the firm’s Newport Beach, Calif., office.  He currently sits on the Board of Advisors for Kum and Go, which operates over 420 convenience stores, and Solar Transport, a petroleum transportation company.

“Having grown up in Mason City I was aware of BVU because of its Graduate and Professional Studies program location in the community,” says McManigal.  “A very good friend of mine is currently a BVU Trustee and told me about some of the incredible things the university is doing for its students and faculty to create a unique learning environment.  I was flattered to be considered as a Trustee candidate and in the process I was fortunate to be invited to Tony Blair's presentation last year as a part of the American Heritage Lecture Series, which was an amazing experience.”

McManigal, whose hobbies include bicycling and music, has two adult children: Paige Akins, a 2008 journalism graduate of the University of Iowa and a Pilates instructor, who lives in Newport Beach with her husband, Jay, a custom home building contractor; and Reed, who earned his bachelor’s and law degrees at the University of Iowa and practices law in Iowa City.

He will serve on the Investment and Academic Affairs committees of the Board of Trustees.

Mark R. Peterson is a 1983 graduate (business and psychology) of the University of South Dakota, where he now serves on the board of the USD Foundation.   Prior to 2004, Peterson was an executive officer of IBP, Inc., and was with the company from 1986 to 2001 when it was sold to Tyson Foods.  From 2001 to 2004, Peterson was a vice president at Tyson Foods.

“I look forward to joining the BVU Board and being a part of this progressive university,” says Peterson.  “BVU’s commitment to student development is something I have admired for years.  This university is committed to the students, faculty and its community.”

His wife, Polly, a 1980 graduate (nutrition) of the University of Nebraska, is a community volunteer and homemaker.  They have three children: Chase, Minneapolis, Minn., a graduate of Iowa State University who works in real estate development; Clair, a junior business major at Morningside College in Sioux City; and Cole, a sophomore at Dakota Valley High School.

Peterson is past chair of the United Way of Siouxland and a member of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce. His interests include spending time with family, snow skiing, biking, reading and walking.

Peterson will serve on the Academic Affairs and Marketing committees of the Board of Trustees.
