Softball Splits a Pair of Games on Wednesday

Mar. 27, 2013

Clermont, Fla.

Freshman Jenna Falline (Newell, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) allowed six hits and struck out two en route to her second complete-game shutout of the week, as the Beavers got an unearned run in the fifth inning for a 1-0 victory.  BVU looked to make it back-to-back wins on the day but came up short in a 7-4 loss to Whitworth University (WA).

Sophomore Erin Kliefoth (Exira, Iowa/Exira) reached on an error to start the fifth and moved up to second on a passed ball.  She later came around to score on junior Brooke Berkey’s (Colfax, Iowa/Colfax-Mingo) RBI triple.  Berkey and sophomore Sam Knudsen (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley), who also tripled in the contest, each finished with two base hits to help lead the way at the plate.

With the win, Falline improves her overall record to 5-1 on the year.

Whitworth scored a run in the first and three more in the third for an early 4-0 lead.

Junior Sam Engleman (Hawrden, Iowa/West Sioux) put BVU on the board in the fourth, as she continues her power streak at the plate, by blasting a solo home run – her third of the year - with the bases empty and one out.  She now has a team-high 13 RBI on the year.

Whitworth got the run back in the bottom half of the inning before making it a 7-1 lead with two more runs in the sixth.

The Beavers didn’t go away quietly, however, rallying with three runs in the seventh inning, getting RBI singles from senior Jessy Bibler (Alta, Iowa/Alta) and sophomore Jordon Pilcher (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids), while also benefiting from an error to score the third.  Engleman came up as the tying run with two outs, but grounded out to end the game.

Kliefoth had two hits for the Beavers, including a double in the second.

Freshman Faith Schmidt (Emmetsburg, Iowa/Emmetsburg) got the start on the mound and dipped to 2-3 overall.  She pitched the first 2.2 innings and was charged with four runs on six hits.  Junior Britney Kubik (Martensdale, Iowa/Martensdale St. Mary’s) worked the final 3.1 innings, and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, while striking out three.

Buena Vista now stands at 8-6 overall and gets set to play two more games on Thursday.  First up for the Beavers is a 1:00pm contest with the College of St. Benedict before taking on SUNY Purchase at 3:00pm.
