With only one conference match-up left next Saturday, the Buena Vista softball team picked up a key doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon by winning 2-0 and 6-2 at the University of Dubuque.
Freshman Jenna Falline held the Spartans to only two hits in the opener, while striking out three, and got just enough offense to pick up the win.
BVU got on the board with a run in the second when Sam Engleman, who singled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a double from Sam Knudsen and then scored on an error by the catcher on what was a strikeout.
Stephanie Hayden then drove home a key insurance run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. Jordon Pilcher, who singled to lead off the inning for the second of her two hits in the contest, scored the run.
The Beavers kept the bats going in the finale, scoring a pair of runs in both the second and third innings before adding a pair of key runs in the sixth after Dubuque had pulled within 4-2 after a run in the fifth.
Sam Knudsen broke a scoreless game in the second by hitting her second home run of the year – a two-run shot – to give BVU a 2-0 lead.
An RBI double by Jessica Stocker in third, who later scored on an error, made it 4-0 Beavers in the third.
Dubuque (11-15, 5-5 IIAC) got a run back in the bottom half before getting a second run in the fifth.
Jessy Bibler then doubled home the game’s final two runs in the sixth, as BVU hit three doubles in the contest.
Falline got the start and was credited with the win, scattering six hits in four innings. Faith Schmidt allowed a run on one hit in three innings.
Buena Vista is now 13-17 overall and 4-8 in conference play. The team will wrap up Iowa Conference play with a home doubleheader against Loras College next Saturday with an IIAC Tournament berth on the line. Game one is set to begin at 2:00pm.
