The Buena Vista men’s and women’s track and field teams are gearing up this week for the start of the 2012 Iowa Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which take place from May 10-12 and are hosted by the University of Dubuque.
The women currently have six individuals and a pair of relays ranked in the top-10 among all other IIAC performers. Sophomore Amber Riedy (Grand Island, Neb./Grand Island Northwest), last year’s champion in the pole vault, is currently tops in the league at 3.04 meters. Freshman Maggie Marker (Clarion, Iowa/Clarion-Goldfield) is ranked eighth in both the 100 (12.45) and 200 (25.88) meter dashes, while Rachel Burnette (Irwin, Iowa/IKM-Manning) enters with the ninth and seventh fastest times, respectively, in the 100 (15.70) and 400 (1:06.38) meter hurdles.
Senior Amber Woodford (Storm Lake, Iowa/Storm Lake) holds the ninth-fastest time in the 200 meter dash (26.08) and is just over a second off of being in the top-10 in the 400 meter dash (1:00.04).
The 4x100 meter relay team enters the championships with the second-fastest clocking in the conference this season at 48.89 seconds. That time is only 0.61 seconds from matching the school record which has stood since 1990. The 4x400 team has the third-fastest time in the league this year at 4:01.80.
On the men’s side, the Beavers have 12 individuals and two relays currently ranked in the top-10 amongst all other IIAC performers.
Senior Tyler Case (Tucson, Ariz./Santa Rita) currently holds the best toss in the javelin at 57.22 meters and enters the 100 meter dash with the fifth-fastest clocking at 11.06 seconds. BVU hasn’t had a men’s outdoor conference champion in the javelin since Mike Wilson in 1992.
Junior Andrew Smith (Brayton, Iowa/Exira), last year’s IIAC Champion in the 400 meter hurdles, is currently second at 55.31 seconds with teammate Grant Hoffman (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) seventh at 56.53 seconds. He looks to become the first Beaver to repeat as conference champion in the event in school history.
Junior Peter Winterton (Storm Lake, Iowa/Storm Lake) is ranked seventh in the 200 meter dash with his best time of 22.24 seconds, as sophomore Ryan Eberly (Manning, Iowa/IKM-Manning) is sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.79 seconds.
Both the 4x100 and the 4x400 meter relay teams are fourth for BVU, with the 4x100 time being one second off Central’s conference-best heading into the event.
The top-eight finishers in each event earn team points throughout the championships, while the top-three place finishers earn all-conference honors.
Action officially begins with the Multi-Events at 3:00pm on Thursday and again with the Multi-Events at 10:00am on Friday. The rest of the action is slated to get underway at 1:00pm on Friday with field events.
