Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Buena Vista used another quick start to its advantage, scoring five times in the third and never looking back, as the Beavers advanced into the championship game of the 2012 Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament with a commanding 10-2 victory over fourth-seed Luther College (25-21).
Junior Reggie Kock gave the Beavers a much-needed complete-game effort on the hill, allowing just the two runs on five hits, while striking out five.
BVU got on the board in a convincing way with a five-run second inning. With runners at the corners and one out, sophomore Nick Schlecht’s RBI bunt single put the Beavers on the board before Ryan Scheetz, Joe Paletta and Brock Yossi all chalked up RBI singles. Dillon Plath’s RBI ground out pushed the margin to 5-0.
Scheetz, who finished 3-for-6 with two RBI in the contest, extended the advantage to 6-0 in the fourth with his second RBI single in as many innings before a two-out error by the Norse in the fifth scored Jesse Munsterman from third to make it 7-0.
Luther put together a threat in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs with only one out before Kock picked up a big strikeout and a ground out to third to end the inning.
The Beavers took advantage of a key two-out throwing error by the Norse in the sixth, to score a pair of unearned runs before Yossi, who went 4-for-5, came through with his second RBI single of the contest.
Paletta continues his torrid hitting by going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Foxx also added three hits for a Beaver offense which pounded out 16 overall.
BVU has now scored 21 runs on 30 hits over its last two contest.
With the win, the Beavers improve to 24-18 overall and become the first-ever fifth-seed to make its way into the championship game. They will take on second-seed Coe College beginning at approximately 1:15pm. The two teams met yesterday with the Kohawks hanging on for a 12-11 victory.
