Baseball Splits DH with Central to Wrap up Weekend Series

Apr. 27, 2013

Pella, Iowa

For the second straight day, the Buena Vista baseball team went extra innings in game one against Central College, but this time it was the Dutch getting a two-out hit in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 2-1 victory.  The Beavers, however, finished the series on a strong note, using an eight-run fourth inning to post a 10-1 win in the finale.

Game one was a pitcher’s duel the entire way, as neither team was able to push a run across until the sixth.  BVU got the on the board first in the top of the frame when sophomore Jesse Munsterman singled to left, scoring Weston Foxx, who had singled to lead off the frame.  The Beavers looked to tack on insurance runs with the bases loaded and just one out, but Dillon Plath lined into a double play to first to end the frame.

Central then rallied with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom half.  After a single and stolen base, the Dutch then tied it with a double down the left field line.

Buena Vista looked to regain the lead in the seventh when Jake Daniels doubled to lead off the inning, but he would be thrown out at home trying to score on Foxx’s single to left.

Baserunners were then at a premium until the 10th when Central again started a rally with two outs.  The Dutch got a single and a walk before ending the game with a single to left center.

Foxx went 2-for-5 at the plate and scored a run, as BVU tallied six hits in the contest.

Scott Harris got a no decision after pitching 7.1 innings, allowing a run on six hits, while striking out three and walking two.  Lucas Hadaway suffered the loss after allowing a run on two hits.

It was all Beavers in game two, as the Beavers quickly jumped out to the 2-0 lead in the first when Munsterman tripled home two runs.

Central got one run back in the second before BVU exploded for eight runs in the fourth, including a two-run single by senior Ryan Scheetz and two more RBI on single from Munsterman.  The Beavers also took advantage of a defensive miscue by Central, scoring two more runs.

Five Beavers held the Dutch to just two hits in the contest en route to the nine-run win.

Munsterman finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBI.  Brandon Wessles turned in three hits and scored twice, while Nick Schlecht added two hits and one run.

Adam Bernstorf improved to 3-1 on the year after allowing a run on one hit over four innings, while striking out two.  Four other pitchers combined to pitch the final three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

BVU is now 18-16 on the year (10-12 IIAC) and will wrap up the home portion of its regular season schedule on Tuesday, April 30 with a doubleheader against Coe College beginning at 1:00pm.
