Zach Mizer joins the Buena Vista wrestling program as a top assistant for head coach Sevond Cole beginning in 2012-13 after serving the past two years as a graduate assistant at Heidelberg College.

“Zach comes to BVU with a remarkable combination of skills needed to effectively coach, especially in Division III,” says BVU Director of Athletics Christyn Abaray.  “His experience in recruiting and in working with specific weight classes will help Coach Cole continue to move our program forward.  We are thrilled to have him on campus.”

Before becoming an assistant coach, Mizer was a four-time letterwinner himself for the Berg, compiling a career overall record of 112-42, a win total that ranks second in program history.  Wrestling at 149 pounds as a sophomore, he captured an individual Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first of three straight seasons.  He surpassed the 30-win plateau in each of his final two seasons at 157 pounds and was a national runner-up in 2010.

“I’m very excited to be adding Coach Mizer to our staff,” says Cole.  “He has proven himself as a wrestler and is held in high regard by the head coaches that he has worked with.  His work ethic, excitement, and passion for the sport of wrestling will add fuel to our program which is heading in the right direction.”

A native of Ohio and a Perry High School graduate, Mizer pursued his master's in education while at Heidelberg and is excited to now be joining the BVU program.

“I am very excited and honored to join Coach Cole and the rest of the Buena Vista University family,” he says.  “I look forward to helping continue the rich tradition and success of the wrestling program.”

Mizer replaces Dana Vote, who was hired as the head coach at Concordia University (Neb.) after last season.
