Athletic Field, Stadium Renovations
Work on $2.4 million in renovations to the athletics playing field, track and facilities at J. Leslie Rollins Stadium took place during the summer of 2011, and most changes were completed by the start of the 2011 football and soccer seasons.
Among the improvements:
- Synthetic turf field
- New blue polyurethane track
- Larger area for concessions and merchandise sales
- New restrooms and storage space for equipment
- Double long jump/triple jump area
- Re-graded discus area for more level ground
Because turf remains in good condition in all weather and under heavy use, it will enable the football and men’s and women’s soccer teams to both practice and play at the stadium with greater frequency. Since the field will no longer need to be watered or mowed, maintenance costs will be reduced. The off-campus grass football and soccer fields will continue to be used for some practices and soccer games depending on scheduling and weather conditions.
Initiation of the project was made possible with a lead gift commitment by BVU Trustee Cordell Peterson, Class of 1963 and his wife Sandra. Through their gift, the Petersons hope to inspire former athletes and others to make contributions toward the project.
As funding becomes available, Buena Vista also plans other improvements to Peterson Field and J. Leslie Rollins Stadium, primarily field lighting, which will enable the university to host its athletic events and intramurals in the evening, and to offer a modern new venue for district high school football, soccer, and track and field competition.
