TLTC Respondus Question Formatting

If you create your questions in Microsoft Word, you will need to Save As and choose the file type Rich Text Format (.rtf) or Plain Text (.txt).

Multiple Choice

The question must begin with a number, followed by either a period "." or a parentheses ")". Leave one space after the question number and then type the question text.

Answers

Each answer must begin with a letter (a-t) followed by a period or a parentheses, followed by one space and then the answer text. The correct answer must have an asterisk "*" directly in front of the question letter (there cannot be a space between the asterisk and the question letter).

*b. RAM
c. CAT
d. PIG

Another option for the answers is to place them at the end of all your questions (and not use the asterisk). The list must begin with the word "Answers" followed by a colon ":". The list must then have the question number, followed by a period or parentheses, one space, and then the correct answer letter.

Note: If you do not specify the correct answer, Respondus will select "A" as the correct answer. If you are importing questions for a survey, there should not be any designated correct answers.

Feedback

To provide general feedback, you must have an at symbol "@", followed by one space, and then the feedback wording. The feedback must be placed after the question text and before the possible answers.

True - False

The question format for True-False questions is similar to the multiple choice format (see the above section). The answer wording for True-False questions must contain either the words True and False or the letters T and F.

Note: The True or T must be listed before the False or F. If False is listed first, the question will be imported with a multiple choice format.

Feedback

To include feedback with True-False questions, follow the same procedure as with Multiple Choice questions.

Answers

As with Multiple Choice questions, the answers for True-False questions can be placed in an answer list at the end of the file. The True-False answers can be designated in three ways: by writing the full words True or False, by writing just "T" or "F", or by writing "a" for true or "b" for false.

Essay

The format for Essay questions is similar to that of Multiple Choice and True-False, except that prior to every Essay question the question type must be designated with "Type: E". The question number and wording follows on the next line.

Fill in the Blank

The format for Fill in the Blank questions is similar to that of Multiple Choice and True-False, except that prior to every Fill in the Blank question the question type must be designated with "Type: F". The question number and wording follows on the next line.

You can only have one correct answer for Fill in the Blank questions, but you may want to enter multiple variations of that answer, because ANGEL is case sensitive.

Matching

The format for Matching questions is similar to that of the questions described above, except that prior to every Matching question the question type must be designated with "Type: MT". The question number and wording follows on the next line.

Answers

Each correct answer match must begin with a letter (a-t) followed by a period or a parentheses. The two parts of a correct match must be separated with an equal sign "=". You can have one space before and after the equal sign, but it is not necessary.

The question number and wording follows on the next line. Correct answers are designated with an asterisk.

Feedback and Answers

To include feedback for correct/incorrect answers, follow the same formatting procedure described above for multiple choice questions.

Instead of designating the correct answer with an asterisk, correct answers can be placed at the end of the file in an answer list (more specific formatting rules are described in the Multiple Choice section). The list must begin with the word "Answers" followed by a colon ":".

The list must then have the question number, followed by a period or parentheses, one space, and then the correct answer letters. The correct answers for each question can be listed in three different ways: place a blank space between each letter, place a comma and a space between each letter, or place only a comma (and no space) between each letter. Each possibility is shown below.
