GRE and MCAT Review for Spring 2018

Jan. 8, 2018

For Spring 2018, the Dean's Fellows program will be running graduate and professional school testing review sessions, open to all students on campus. While we expect the bulk of our review to be for the GRE and the MCAT, students taking other tests (with the exception of the LSAT) should ask if it's possible to have their tests added to the program; we can make review arrangements as needed.

The GRE review sessions will take place over the course of ten meetings on Tuesdays at 11am starting on Feb 6 2018. The MCAT review sessions will take place over the same time period (with perhaps an additional meeting or two) from 7:30 to 9PM on Thursday evenings. Location for both events will be announced closer to the beginning of term.

Interested? Please fill out the form linked here in order to sign up for the review -- you'll receive a welcome email and more information in late January! Note: While the sessions themselves are free, you may need to purchase or borrow a review book; our review model is roughly based on the Kaplan method, and we'll be using Kaplan's shorter review texts for both the GRE and MCAT sessions.

Please feel free to email the Dean's Fellows Coordinator, Dr. Bernhardt (bernhardt@bvu.edu) if you'd like more information.

Still looking for Quiz Bowl volunteers

Dec. 6, 2017

I am still looking for volunteers to help BVU with the hosting of our first annual high school quiz bowl tournament. The tournament, The BVU Free For All, is Saturday December 9.  It should run from 8:30 am until the mid-afternoon. Come test out your announcer voice as a question reader, channel your inner accountant as a scorekeeper or simply be a host with the most for our guests showcasing the best of BVU.

We have twelve teams currently registered and possibly 2 more. We will have over 75 students plus attending parents here on campus for the day. While the event did not originate from a recruiting perspective, it has evolved into an opportunity to interact with some high achieving high school students. Too many volunteers is not possible; even without a designated job, mingling with the students and parents who are waiting in between matches will be helpful. The admissions department has offered a lot of logistical support and a free lunch for teams (and volunteers, too). I think faculty and staff can showcase the academic strength and support the BVU can offer through simply being there.

I hope to get enough volunteers to make this a smoothly run tournament and show BVU in a great light to an academically focused audience. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated; question readers are a definite need. Thank you.

Cumberland Research Award Submissions

Dec. 4, 2017

Through the generosity of alumnus Steven Smith, President and Dean of California Western School of Law, a special research competition award has been established. Named in honor of Dr. Bill Cumberland, Professor Emeritus of History, the award will go to the student who writes the best paper during each academic year.

The guidelines for the competition are as follows:

1. Ordinarily the paper should have been written as part of the regular academic work.

2. Papers may be nominated by faculty (e.g., best paper in a course) or submitted by a student. Seniors graduating in May are not eligible for this award.

3. Among the factors considered should be thoroughness of research, quality of writing, creativity, level of analysis, and originality of thought.

4. The award should be open to major creative efforts (creative writing, visual arts) if such efforts include or are accompanied by relevant writing involving a research effort, e.g., by an analysis of the artistic tradition or school from which the creative work springs.

Papers completed during Fall Semester, Interim or prior to the February 16 deadline in the spring may be considered. Papers completed after the deadline may be held over for next year’s competition. Faculty may wish to copy an excellent paper and return such for possible consideration.

Deadline for submissions is Friday February 16, 2018

The recipient of the award will be announced at the Student Recognition Banquet.

Dr. Klee is re-releasing his classic Christmas CDs

Nov. 28, 2017

Dr. David Klee, professor of music at Buena Vista University, has been busy remixing his classic Christmas CDs of instrumental flute and voice. Two of the CDs feature Dr. Klee performing many classic Christmas songs complete with orchestral background. The third CD features both Dr. Klee on flute and his wife, Judi, singing several Christmas song arrangements again with complete orchestral background. The CDs would make great Christmas gifts! Or if you would like, you could simply listen to them to brighten up your Christmas holidays. If you would like a copy contact Dr. Klee at: klee@bvu.edu.

Volunteers Needed for High School Quiz Bowl Tournament

Nov. 27, 2017

I am looking for volunteers to help BVU with the hosting of our first annual high school quiz bowl tournament. The tournament, The BVU Free For All, is Saturday December 9.  It should run from 8:30 am until the mid-afternoon. I am looking for people who will be question readers, scorekeepers and other tasks that will not occur to me until they are needed (it’s our first go at this).

We have eight teams currently registered and up to 8 more by email commits. Even at a half-positive outlook, we should have twelve high school teams (~75 players) and the attending parents here on campus for the day. While the event did not originate from a recruiting perspective, it has evolved into an opportunity to interact with some high achieving high school students. The admissions department has offered a lot of logistical support and a free lunch for teams (and volunteers, too). I think faculty and staff can showcase the academic strength and support the BVU can offer through simply being there. Reading questions, small interactions between rounds and answering possible questions from inquisitive parents creates a significant impression. Our own BVU quiz bowl team all remember the very personable question reader from the tournament we attended.

I hope to get enough volunteers to make this a smoothly run tournament and show BVU in a great light to an academically focused audience. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated; question readers are a definite need. Thank you.
