Dr. Casstevens has published extensively in scholarly journals and contributed book and encyclopedia chapters in the areas of social work, counseling and mental health. She has conducted research and developed programming in mental health, prevention, and community engagement. Willa presents at international and national conferences, in addition to state and local venues. She has provided training on crisis response, cognitive behavior therapy, CBT for psychosis, and suicide prevention. Willa has been professionally licensed as a clinical social worker in North Carolina and Florida, where she practiced for 15 years in the south Florida community mental health arena.
Dr. Casstevens' tenure at North Carolina State University was distinguished by her becoming a Glasser Scholar with the William Glasser Institute, a Community Engaged Faculty Fellow at NC State, and Principal Investigator on the North Carolina State University Suicide Prevention Program, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Campus Suicide Prevention Grant. At BVU, Willa directs the Social Work Program. She works collaboratively with the Field Director to ensure social work students are exposed to a variety of rich learning experiences both on and off campus while they pursue their BSW degrees.
